GroundUP
In a time of globalization, urbanisation and mass urban migration ‘Ground UP’ interrogates design opportunities surrounding housing the community of Ikemeleng.
Contextually and currently, the South African housing policy produces formalised neighbourhoods based on the rejuvenation of greenfield sites. A plot and parcel approach that has shown its shortcomings over the years. Hence the need for quality environments around housing have not been met. Subsequently the approach misaligns to the ‘lived reality’ facing the majority of South Africans. In a context of rapid, stagnant development and lack of service delivery, these castaway communities lack a new urban centre - planned around social intensities usually found within the dense cities of the Global South.
The Rustenburg’s Platinum mine is one of many mines left barren. Its surroundings consist of low-density sprawl, informal zinc shanty towns. It is apparent that there is a disregard for any higher-level urban planning or service delivery. This tapestry of informal incrementality is the housing reality for many South Africans. How do we utilize these build energies to allow the Ikemeleng populous to exit this cycle?
