The Establishment
As part of Berlage Generation 32's collective project titled Fashion House - an exploration of the architectural consequences of the fashion industry in Rotterdam, The Netherlands - The Establishment is a new tailor shop that caters for a shift towards lifelong wardrobe staples, reinvigorating the sartorial significance of the workers’ suit by providing durable utilitarian fabrics that accommodate a slower paced fashion industry. Its offering of suits, jackets, trousers, overcoats and shirts — certified by Fashion House’s “Made to Last” certification — promotes the sustainable process of tailoring in a venue that prioritizes professional styling, repair, and adjustments of clothing. This contribution shifts the tailor shop from being an experiential retail setting to a locale that serves the diverse workers society of 2040. As more than just a place for clothing and alterations, The Establishment functions as an all-encompassing co-workspace and business club, offering sources of self repair center, on-remise tailor ateliers, meeting rooms for personal consultancy and a business club for networking and professional preparation for a diverse and restless world of work.
As the purchase of clothing becomes a significant life event, this contribution offers a new setting for nervous freelancers or budding entrepreneurs to gather work and connect. The durability and versatility of its offered suits — that incorporate shifting cut patterns and replaceable features such as collars, pockets, and cuffs — reconfigure the silhouette of a classic office worker to one that is more suited to a labor market where manual routine has collapsed and tasks have become increasingly diverse.
